Mary-Kate: The real story

It struck me like a bolt of lightning. There I was, on my morning train ride to work, when I glanced over at someone reading US Magazine, or People, or EW, it doesn't matter. There was a picture of Mary-Kate Olsen, sans her sister, with the headline screaming, 'Is MK really OK?'

You may think to yourself, so what? By now we've all gotten more information than needed about Mary Kate Olsen's battle with an eating disorder and her subsequent treatment. We've also read how her sister Ashley went away by herself for a bit and was there to greet her sister when she was released. Everything seems normal right? Wrong.

Due to the eating disorder and the treatment, the Olsen twins have finally achieved what has always been their biggest dream. They are now seen as separate entities rather than one two-headed celebrity monster. Now it's easy to tell them apart - MK is the brunette who is too skinny and looks a little strung out from drugs, whereas Ashley is blond, slightly taller, and though still the definition of petite, seems more full figured. Flash back to three months ago, could you even tell these two apart at all? No, it was impossible. They were everywhere, and always together, usually posing for some picture like a pair of intertwined swans. Even their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, yes they have one, reads 'Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.' They didn't get their own stars. They hosted SNL together. Every movie they've ever done, it's been both of their names above the credits. They even chose to both go to NYU, while still claiming they wanted to be viewed as individuals. We as the public just weren't buying it. But all that has changed now.

They get separate articles in magazines, are spotted out and about on their own. You could almost look forward a few years and see the division continue. Both are headed to NYU, but I could see Mary Kate, the one who went to rehab and now has an edge, drifting in school, maybe winding up in some independent movies in meatier roles, showing a dark side, or at least a Disney-esque version of a darkside. Ashley on the other hand, she's headed straight for the Dean's list. Her career won't suffer either, however she'll slowly train herself to go the Romantic Comedy route, positioning herself as the next Julia, or Sandra, or Reese. It totally is going to happen.

Now you must ask yourself, a plan so ingenious, so complex, was it intentional? Is the eating disorder real? I'm not saying eating disorders aren't a serious thing, they are and represent a serious life threatening disease that affects thousands of women AND men each year. Maybe it's the whole celebrity mind warp. It's hard to take anything they do at face value, so why couldn't this all be some elaborate scheme? And if it is, I say bravo to both of them on a job well done.

So I feel it's time to say goodbye to the days of MK and Ashley, as one sole property. It's hello to Ms. Ashley Olsen and her sister Ms. Mary-Kate Olsen.
