Funk legend Rick James made the world dance with his hit 'Super Freak', but today his fans are in mourning after the singer was found dead in his Los Angeles home. James died in his sleep at his home near Universal City, publicist Sujata Murthy said. The body of the singer who lived alone was found by his personal assistant, who then notified police.

The Buffalo native led a colourful career and a troubled life. James served time in prison for assault, battled a crack addiction for many years and suffered a stroke while on tour in 1997.

James' legacy is sure to remain in the hearts and minds of many as he had somewhat of a comeback on the Dave Chappelle Show on Comedy Central. James himself appeared on the show, but was portrayed by Chappelle.

An autopsy and toxicology exam will be conducted on Saturday, but there are reports that he died of natural causes. James was survived by three children and three grandchildren. He was 56.
