LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Reuters is reporting that Rob Reiner will replace director Ted Griffin on the much talked about update of 'The Graduate.' Griffin wrote the script for the romantic comedy, which has shut down after one week of shooting. Griffin's screenwriting credits include 'Ocean's Eleven,' and 'Matchstick Men' but this would have been his directorial debut.
The film is a continuation of the old movie and centers on a young woman who discovers that her grandmother was the basis for the Mrs. Robinson character in the original movie. The iconic 1967 movie featured Anne Bancroft in the role of Mrs. Robinson but here Shirley MacLaine will be playing the grandmother role. Jennifer Aniston has signed on to be the lead character and Mark Ruffalo, Mena Suvari and Kevin Costner are also on board.
Studio representatives are citing the standby excuse of “creative differences“ as the reason for Griffin‘s departure. Reiner's most recent feature as director was the romantic comedy 'Alex and Emma' (2003). Filming will resume next week.
