While the cause of 'funk ‘n roll' originator Rick James' death remains uncertain, family and fans are proceeding with plans for a celebration of the star’s life.
A public memorial service and viewing for the funk legend is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles tomorrow from 5 to 8 p.m. PT at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. PT Thursday.
James was found dead at his home on Friday at the age of 56.
The singer, born James A. Johnson Jr., rose to fame for his highly-sexual tunes in the 1970s and 80s. He was enjoying a renewal in popularity, thanks in part to the cult-like following of comedian Dave Chappelle’s comedy skit show.
'Rick wanted everyone who loved him to be with him at the end and to celebrate his life,' said Sujata Murthy, his record label's spokeswoman.
An autopsy performed over the weekend failed to determine the cause of James’ death (see ''Punk-funk' originator's death still a mystery.') The autopsy found no sign of foul play but 'no obvious sign' of what caused the music pioneer's death, Los Angeles Country coroner's spokesman David Campbell said. Coroner's officials were awaiting results of a toxicology test, which they said could take several weeks. The singer had a history of cocaine addiction.
James' three children - daughter Ty and sons Rick Jr. and Tazman - said through a spokeswoman they believe their father died of heart failure.
