Detroit native John Heffron became the Last Comic Standing on Thursday night. He beat out fellow finalists Alonzo Bodden and Gary Gulman in the live finale from the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA. The winner was determined based on audience voting. The win brings him a talent deal from NBC, a stand-up special on Comedy Central and an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Heffron, who formerly competed on Star Search says he has been doing comedy since he was old enough to get into clubs.
Heffron, who has a squinty style reminiscent of Bobcat Goldthwait, won over audiences with the standard comic mix of childhood whining and relationship complaints. All three finalists were crowd favorites. Last year’s finalists Ralphie May and winner Dat Phan both performed in the season finale. Both admitted to host Jay Mohr that they voted for first runner-up Alonzo Bodden.
Mohr announced that NBC will be running a Batlle of the Best featuring favorites from the first two seasons of the show. This will allow many of the finalists a chance to compete again. If you missed any of the second season you can catch an all-day marathon of the show on Comedy Central this Saturday.
