Bon Voyage: Renowned Julia Child Dies

Julia Child, best known for her preparation of scrumptious French delights before American television audiences, has died.

A statement said “The French Chef” host died in her sleep Thursday at her home in Santa Barbara, Calif., just three days before what would have been her 92nd birthday. The cause of death was not given.

Child made her way into American households through her television series and books where she encouraged ordinary viewers to attempt exotic cookery. Her charismatic personality, as relayed by way of her quavering, yet chipper voice, made her a staple among both novices and experienced cooks. She was known for ending her landmark public television lessons at a fully prepared table and with the wish, 'Bon appetit.'

Despite her famed culinary career, Child did not take a cooking lesson until she was in her 30s and she was 51 at her television debut in 1963. The show continued for 206 episodes, winning Child a Peabody award in 1965 and an Emmy in 1966. She was on the cover of Time magazine in 1966.

Since the 1980s, she devoted attention to promoting the serious study of food and cooking. She co-founded the American Institute of Wine and Food in San Francisco in 1981 and co-founded the James Beard Foundation, in honor of her friend and fellow chef, in New York City in 1986.

Paul Child, Julia's husband of 48 years died in 1994. The couple had no children.
