Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, stars of the classic television show Laverne & Shirley, claimed stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday. 'We never got any Emmys, so this is great,' Penny Marshall told a crowd of fans and a few celebrity attendees. Garry Marshal, Penny’s brother and the creator of Laverne and Shirley, and Henry Winkler, famous for his role as Fonzie on Happy Days, both attended.
The two stars congratulated and thanked each other. 'I would not be standing here today were it not for one person, and that person I share this day and night with is Miss Penny Marshall,' Cindy Williams said.
Laverne and Shirley were originally cast on Happy Days as love interests for Fonzie and Richie Cunningham. The two then began their spin off series as working girls in 1950s Milwaukee. The show maintained high ratings throughout its eight year run from 1973 – 1983 and continues to entertain through syndication. Later this month, the series will be released on DVD.
Both Marshall and Williams continue to have successful film and television careers. Marshall is a producer and director of such blockbusters as Big and A League of Their Own. Williams worked as a co-producer on Father of the Bride and makes guest appearances on television shows such as Law and Order.
