Britney Spears will place suing the New York Post alongside her list of wedding plans this week.
The pop princess is suing the Post for the Thursday editions, in which Spears is splashed on the front page drinking from a small bottle, with the headline “Britney Hits the bottle.” The inside story claimed the beverage Spears was drinking “appears to be” whiskey.
It seems Spears, 22, was actually drinking ginseng, a nonalcoholic herbal tonic that boosts energy, her attorney stated.
“Ms. Spears intends to file a lawsuit against the New York Post and (writer) Bill Hoffman unless the paper immediately issues an appropriate retraction, apology, and financial settlement.” Attorney Martin Singer warned in a statement.
In the USA Today article “Spears hits the roof over booze story” Post editor Col Allan said the paper published the photograph “after being assured by the Bauer-Griffin photo agency the Ms. Spears was consuming a mini-bottle of “Glenlivet whiskey” The Post ran the story despite several attempts to reach the Spears’ publicist.
The Post has yet to retract the story. The tabloid continues to print stories about Spears, including a story in the Wednesday edition, which printed that Spears’ fiancée’s ex-girlfriend had a son.
This is the second story this month that has controversial consequences for the Post. In the July 6 edition, the tabloid ran a front-page story that John Kerry had picked Richard Gephardt as his running mate. Kerry actually chose John Edwards.
