According to MTV News, Robert Smith has revealed that he never legally married pop songstress Brandy, although the couple share a child.

In interviews this week with New York-based radio stations WBLS and WQHT, Smith alleged that the 'marriage' was staged - at the urging of Brandy's mother/manager, Sonia Norwood - to protect the performer's good-girl image.

In 2002, the 'Moesha' star shocked audiences with news of her marriage (to one of her former producers) which took place in a secret ceremony. The announcement was soon followed with word of that the star was with child. The newlyweds even chronicled Brandy's pregnancy and childbirth in 'MTV's Diary Presents: Brandy-Special Delivery,' a reality television-styled series. The couple separated a year ago and has joint custody of their 2-year-old daughter Sy'rai, but Smith felt it was time to reveal the truth.

While the 'Baby' and 'I Wanna Be Down' singer is 'hurt and shocked' by Smith's recent allegations, she has not denied them. Instead, Brandy, 25, has said there was a 'spiritual union and a true commitment to each other' - although no legal marriage - between the couple.

To add further insult, Smith adds that he'd been involved with another woman when he impregnated Brandy. Since his 'divorce' from the entertainer, Smith says he has reconciled with the woman who is now expecting his child. Brandy has been playing the field, as well, namely with Quentin Richardson of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers. However, she feels Smith's sudden urge to shed light on their situation is for his own gain.

'We still share a common bond through our daughter. He is not thinking about her, me, or what we had together,' she said in a statement through her publicist. 'He is trying to destroy my reputation while using me and our daughter to get publicity and radio airplay for his artists. I am stunned that he is being so dirty about it.'

Smith's disclosure has surfaced nearly one month after Brandy's return to the music charts with her new album, 'Afrodisiac.'
