Bourne Reigns Supreme at the Box Office

Matt Damon finally has another hit on his hands. The Bourne Supremacy, sequel to “The Bourne Identity” debuted with sales of $53.5 million according to studio estimates. Good reviews helped lift the movie to the number one position.

Matt Damon reprised his role as the amnesiac assassin. The First movie did $27.1 million in its first weekend box office in the summer of 2002.

Universal Studios made The Bourne Supremacy for about $75 million a relatively reasonable price for a thriller full of chase scenes. 'Making this film at a reasonable budget by today's standards just is something else to celebrate,' said Nikki Rocco, Universal's head of distribution.

Unfortunately, Halle Barry was not so luckily. Her version of “Catwoman” opened in third at $17.16 million behind “I,Robot” which took in another $22.05 million to boost its total to $95.4 million.

Catwoman, which cost a bit less than $100 million to make, disappointed producer Warner Bros. 'I was hoping it would open up with a few more dollars in the bank,' said Dan Fellman, Warner's head of distribution. 'But it's a pretty competitive weekend out there. We'll have to see how we hold up during the week.' Based on the horrible reviews, it’s unlikely that this movie will do much better, unless it suddenly develops a cult following ala “Showgirls.”
