The controversial talk show host Jerry Springer is thinking about springing back into politics, as the governor of Ohio in 2006.
While Springer is no stranger to politics, (a former mayor of Cincinnati) he begins to weigh whether his political experience in the past will override his notoriety as trashy talk show host. “I’m convinced that my popularity makes me the leading Democrat to win the primary.” Springer told Newsday.
However, with his talk show portraying prostitution, cheating spouses, and strip teases on a regular basis, could have a negative effect on his campaign being taken seriously in the general election. “If I run in the primary I’m sure it will be contested but I’m sure I’ll win. The general election will be a little more difficult. It’s a Republican state, but it’s changing.”
Nonetheless, with his popularity and reputation, Springer says he’ll be able to tap into his audience and bring in new voters. Which shouldn’t be difficult with his support base; during his stay at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston, Springer was mobbed for autographs and fans rushing to take his picture.
Springer’s popularity has also been well received by the delegates attending the Democratic National Convention. Maybe the next time, the chants of “Jerry, Jerry, Jerry” are heard will be at a rally for his campaign. “It’s been wonderful. Just look around at all of these people.”
