Rapper and actor DMX was arrested on charges of attempted auto theft at Kennedy Airport Thursday night after posing as an FBI agent.
DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, and pal Jackie Hudgins were arrested after Port Authority police responded to a 911 call about a dispute in one of the New York airport’s parking lots. The conflict was between Simmons, Hudgins and another man whose car they allegedly tried to steal, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation indicated that Simmons, 33, may have identified himself as a federal agent to the car owner, according to Tony Ciavolella, a Port Authority spokesman. Simmons then attempted to pull the owner from his car. No one was hurt and no weapons were recovered.
Simmons and Hudgins were arrested on charges of attempted robbery, criminal impersonation and criminal mischief, Ciavolella said, and they would remain in custody until being turned over to the Queens district attorney's office early today.
According to a New York Daily News law enforcement source, DMX would also be charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol as well as running a security gate during the incident.
Later in the evening, the Daily News reports a young unidentified man appeared “to bail DMX out,” calling himself a friend of the rapper's. 'I'm definitely in shock,” the man said. “We were supposed to be on our way to Switzerland, but he didn't show up.'
Following the deaths of Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G., DMX took over as a reigning, undisputed king of hardcore rap with his 1998 debut “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot.” Yet, the rapper shocked the hip-hop world with an announcement earlier this year to end his musical career to focus on religious pursuits. DMX has acted in films including 'Romeo Must Die', 'Exit Wounds' and 'Cradle 2 The Grave.'
